People First of Ontario is the provincial organization representing people who have diverse abilities.
“People First Ontario is the provincial voice for people who have been labelled with an ‘intellectual disability’. We are about rights – human rights, citizenship rights, accommodations rights and language rights. The right to freedom, choice and equality for all.” (People First of Ontario, 2016)
Their Goals Are
- TO promote EQUALITY for all persons
- To assist other people trying to speak up for themselves and making their own decisions
- To teach the member about the RIGHTS, ABILITIES, and STRENGTHS of People First of Ontario
The Chatham People First group holds meetings once a month. They host a Dinner and Dance on the first Friday of each month. They attend conferences and workshops offered through People First of Ontario, as well as host workshops in Chatham or Wallaceburg.
Membership is open to interested self-advocates
