On Friday, March 17, local MPP Trevor Jones met with the team at Community Living Chatham-Kent to learn more about the $6,400 Resilient Communities Fund Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation that was used to purchase technology to rebuild the Outward Bound Program from the impacts of the pandemic. CLC-K employees and people who access services will utilize the technology to develop stronger social connections, foster their abilities, and be active within the community.
“Through the Resilient Communities Fund Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Outward-Bound Program will continue to allow people in our community who have diverse abilities to develop stronger social connections and have access to required documentation and online resources. This will allow people in our community to participate in provided quality service and opportunity to create meaningful connections.” said Trevor Jones, MPP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington.
The pandemic altered how people were able to participate in activities and spend time with friends. CLC-K rose to the challenge with a re-imagined opportunity for day programs. The Outward Bound program offers one-to-one support with a Direct Support Professional, driving to the person’s home weekly for up to 7 hours, providing the chance to connect the person to their community. The OTF grant has equipped employees with a tablet computer, so they have the ability to access required documentation and online resources. With employees having the ability to perform documentation tasks outside of the office, there is more time spent with people who access services.
CLC-K’s Outward Bound Program provides individualized services based on personal choice. “This grant allows people who have diverse abilities the opportunity to participate in their community, and assists with offering modernized out-of-building programming,” said Ron Coristine, Executive Director at CLC-K. “We are extremely grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support.”
