Sass Road Development – Discovering Dreams…Connecting Lives!
Community Living Chatham-Kent believes in all people being part of their community and having access to the community. To meet the growing needs of our community and those which the agency supports, Community Living Chatham-Kent has constructed a single-storey building on Sass Road. The new building consists of approximately 6500 square feet with provision for a future one-storey addition to the west. The space accommodates up to 50 people who have an intellectual disability that choose to participate in a Sheltered Workshop Program. The program has an industrial focus; however, production will be secondary to meaningful employment. The space also has a large direct care facilities to accommodate a wide spectrum of needs. The entire building is accessible to all those whom it provides services.
The Sheltered Workshop is a voluntary program that offers meaningful and achievable work activity and options. Personal satisfaction in accomplishments in one’s workplace enhances self-esteem and pride as a contributing member of one’s community. The support and modified environment of this program will allow each and every participant the right to be involved in work to the best of their ability.
Community Living Chatham-Kent has received $1,000,000 for the construction of the facility. However, the agency must now focus its fundraising attention to continue outfitting the building with the required equipment, training tools, and furnishings to address the specialized needs of the people who participate in the Sheltered Workshop.
The goal of the agency is to provide the best opportunities for people it supports and to give them every chance possible to be included in the community.
Participation in the community can include:
-
Community functions and events
-
Recreation and leisure
-
Grocery shopping and appointments
-
Church and bible hour
-
Time with peers
The new development at Sass Road promotes community awareness and accessibility. It increases participation in the community for people who have an intellectual disability and promotes a healthy community where all members have the chance to participate and belong.
